Bearcats for Empowerment & Mentorship (BEAM)
2024
Inspired by the need to support BIPOC students navigating unfamiliar environments, Gabe founded Bearcats for Empowerment & Mentorship (BEAM) to provide a space for peer mentorship, advocacy, and empowerment. The initiative focuses on helping students find their voice, develop leadership skills, and build a supportive community.
BEAM was established to address the challenges BIPOC students face in predominantly white institutions. Gabe’s personal experiences inspired him to create a mentorship program that connects new students with upperclassmen, providing guidance, resources, and a sense of belonging. BEAM fosters an inclusive environment where students are encouraged to share their stories, learn from one another, and advocate for systemic change.
Key Initiatives
Mentorship Program
Through one-on-one mentoring, students build confidence, leadership skills, and a stronger sense of community.
Workshops and Events
BEAM organizes workshops on topics such as navigating identity, self-advocacy, and creating change, alongside social events to strengthen community bonds.
Advocacy Projects
The program encourages students to participate in initiatives that promote equity and inclusion on campus, helping them develop as future leaders and change-makers.
Notable Achievements
Since its inception, BEAM has grown to become a vital part of the school community, with increased participation and engagement from both mentors and mentees. The initiative has successfully launched several advocacy projects, and its workshops have provided essential tools for self-advocacy and leadership.
“BEAM has helped me find my place and connect with people who understand my experiences. It’s a mentorship program, yeah, but it’s a community, too.”
